Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for responses to commonly asked questions. If you have further questions, please contact the Jewish Studies program through the Virtual Advising Center (VAC).

I'm a native speaker or have studied Hebrew before. Can I skip the first sequence?

Students with prior knowledge of Hebrew may test out of some or all of these courses. Students who place into a second year or higher language course may fulfill this requirement with a higher level language course, by petition.

Please contact the Jewish Studies advisor to schedule a placement test.

Can I take courses as P/NP?

No more than two courses may be taken P/NP; this applies to the major and both minors. Petitions must be submitted.

I’ve taken lower division courses at my community college. Can they count?

You will need to petition the course to see if it will apply towards the major or minor.

You can email completed petitions to jewishstudies@ucsd.edu and make sure to include: Undergraduate Petition Form (one per course), course syllabus, and relevant course work needed for review.
