Statements from Jewish Studies
Disclaimer:
These statements should not be taken as a position of the University, or the campus, as a whole.
Almost fifty years to the day after the 1973 Arab-Israeli War (Yom Kippur War), Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel, infiltrating cities and towns across Israel’s south, killing over 1200 civilians, and kidnapping 250 men, women, and children. This was a horrific act of anti-Jewish violence. We in Jewish Studies condemn acts of violence against civilians. We grieve with the families of the murdered, and those whose loved ones have been taken hostage.
I invite you to read Chancellor Khosla's
comments on the attacks on Israel, as well as University of California Board of Regents Chair Richard Leib and UC President Michael V. Drake’s
statement on mideast violence. The ongoing loss of civilian lives constitutes a horrific tragedy in Israeli/Palestinian relations. My colleagues and I send our wishes for healing, security, and peace in the region, and our hope that the diverse community of UC San Diego can come together in care of our loved ones and one another.
